techlaw: internships for law students

what is it?

The techlaw programme offers Auckland University law students (in their final or penultimate year) the chance to get real-world experience by working in a boutique technology law firm.

The programme introduces law students interested in technology and entrepreneurship to life in a tech law firm.  We first ran a version of this programme in 2018 – when we placed interns in tech companies. Participating companies and law students said they benefited immensely from that programme.

Last year we had to cancel the programme but this year we are bringing it back, although in a modified format.

Our 2019 lawtech interns at our Auckland offices.

the 2021 programme

  • We are offering two internship positions this year: one in the first half of the year, and the other in the second half.
  • The part-time paid internships will run for six weeks, with a 10 hr/week commitment required from each student.
  • Students will work at our Auckland offices, at times to be agreed between the student and us.

Students will gain practical experience by working with our lawyers to provide legal assistance to technology and high growth companies. Students will get the opportunity to do work that is common when working for a technology company – things like preparing company resolutions and constitutions and reviewing simple agreements. We’ll provide on-going training and support for our interns, and will also assign a buddy to assist each intern during the programme.

who are we looking for?

Exceptional law students in their final or penultimate year who are interested in entrepreneurship and technology and who are keen to apply their legal knowledge to the tech sector.  If you are smart, personable, have great communication skills and an entrepreneurial spirit, then you are exactly who we are looking for.

Students are welcome to apply and participate in the techlaw programme even if they have completed or are intending to complete other internships/clerkships (eg summer clerkships) with other law firms.
